Spring

Snow retreats and trails open up. Walk the Lake Estes path from your cabin, or bike the paved loop. In RMNP, lower routes—Lily Lake, Sprague Lake, Moraine Park, Deer Mountain—clear first. Waterfalls peak at Alberta Falls and Chasm Falls. Trout wake up on the Big Thompson. Bring layers: sun is warm, shade is cool. Give elk with calves space, then unwind by the fireplace.

A dense forest of tall, slender aspen trees with white bark and dark markings stands over a green understory of grass and small plants. The scene shows closely spaced trunks extending vertically.
A mountain range with snow-capped peaks rises above a dense green forest, while dramatic orange and yellow clouds fill the sky during sunset or sunrise.

Summer

Long days, cool nights. Start early for Bear, Nymph, Dream and Emerald Lakes; strong hikers add Sky Pond. Drive Trail Ridge Road for tundra walks, or climb seasonal Old Fall River Road. Paddle or SUP Lake Estes, book horseback rides, ride the Aerial Tramway, and finish with patios and breweries downtown. Evenings are jacket weather—grill on the deck and stargaze.

Fall

Crisp air and gold aspens. Best color along Bear Lake Road, Moraine Park, and the Peak-to-Peak Scenic Byway. Hear elk bugling (observe from distance). Photographers like sunrise at Sprague Lake and sunset at Many Parks Curve. Hikes are dry and uncrowded after Labor Day. Make a color-drive loop to Allenspark and back through the canyon. Evenings cool fast—fireplace time.

A large elk with prominent antlers stands in a field of tall, golden grass, looking slightly upward with its mouth open. Trees and shrubs are visible in the blurred background.
Snow-covered mountains rise above a forested landscape with low clouds partially obscuring the peaks under a blue sky with scattered clouds.

Winter

Quiet, bright, and surprisingly sunny. Snowshoe the Bear Lake corridor to Nymph, Dream, or Emerald; try Moraine Park meadows after storms. Sled at Hidden Valley (bring your own). Watch elk and mule deer in frosted fields. In town, warm up with cocoa and holiday lights. Pack traction for sidewalks and layers for the dry cold. Nights are for fireplaces and stars.

Our 45 two-bedroom cabins and boutique lodge rooms make Solitude a top choice for family reunions, romantic getaways, and mountain adventures in Estes Park, Colorado. In the early 1900s, watercolor artist Charles Partridge Adams built his studio on this land and nicknamed it “The Sketch Box.” Today you still arrive on Sketch Box Lane — a nod to the property’s creative roots. The cabins were developed in 2003 and the Lodge opened in 2020. In 2025, management was assumed by Estes Park’s local management team, The Wolf Rentals. Through the 2013 flood and the 2021 fire, Solitude endured—still a quiet place of rest and inspiration in the Rockies.
