Why a 4.9 earns twice what a 4.7 earns

$49,700 or $102,000
Same town. Same three bedrooms, two baths, six guests. One group of cabins is rated 4.7–4.8. The other is rated 4.9–5.0 with more than 100 reviews. PriceLabs estimates the first at $49,700 a year and the second at $102,000: a nightly rate 44% higher and a calendar 26 points fuller.

A tenth of a star is not a rounding error here. It's the difference between an above-average home and a below-average one. These are different homes, so this isn't a promise that moving one rating doubles one income. It is the size of the stakes.
Why the gap exists
Airbnb ranks by quality. In its own words, "higher quality listings with better ratings and reviews tend to rank higher in search," and as of August 2026 its search results "prioritize higher-quality homes." Airbnb badges by quality. Guest Favorites, re-evaluated daily from ratings, review text, the category scores for cleanliness, accuracy, check-in, communication, location, and value, host cancellations, review removals, and quality problems reported to customer service, made up nearly half of all Airbnb bookings in the last quarter of 2025, and Airbnb has removed more than 550,000 low-quality listings since 2023. AirDNA’s 2026 national award winner for guest-loved, platform-badged share scored 92.4%. The Wolf’s Guest Favorite share was 96.6%. Guests book by quality. They filter for Guest Favorites, sort by rating, and read reviews. A deep history of good ones is the best evidence a stranger can have that the house is what the listing says.
The effect shows up everywhere it's measured. An independent 2026 analysis of 18,000 listings across four U.S. markets found 4.9+ listings out-earning 4.7–4.79 listings by 27%. Cornell's hotel research found a one-point rise in a hotel's 100-point review index worth up to 1.42% in revenue per available room.

What it takes to be on the right side
A 4.94 across 120 homes is not an attitude. It's full-time local people in the houses, an inspection at every turnover, reviews read as text and acted on when they recur, listings that promise only what the house delivers, and a revenue professional pricing the result as the premium product it is. Scale pays for all of that, and scale is why it holds on a Saturday in July.
